Green Community Honorees

In August, the Shoreview City Council honored several local residents and one church as winners of the Shoreview Green Community Awards.

The 2010 winners were recognized for landscaping efforts that improve water quality in local lakes, streams and wetlands.

The following individuals were recipients of the Green Community Awards:

Kathy and Wayne Damerow, for native and ornamental plant gardens that replace some lawn and add to wildlife habitat.

Roger and Mary Lou Klinkhammer, for native and ornamental plant gardens and contouring for runoff control.

Carol and Jerry McShane, for their retaining wall and shoreline converted to ornamental and native plants.

Presbyterian Church of the Way, for a rain garden that captures roof runoff.

Ron and Mary Sholl, for their shoreline buffer of native shrubs, grasses and natural stone.

Diane Ward and James Mulholland, for a rain garden with native plantings that replace some lawn, plus downspouts that direct water into the garden via subterranean piping.

Richard and Mary Zaun, for two rain gardens replacing existing tiling for runoff control.

City of Shoreview, for a volunteer-maintained rain garden at Lake Johanna Fire Station No. 4, 3615 Victoria St. This garden, primarily of native plants, collects runoff from the roof and the parking lot.

All individuals live in Shoreview except for Richard and Mary Zaun, who live in the Grass Lake Watershed in Roseville.

The properties were showcased July 31 and Aug. 1 in the Shoreview Green Community's annual, self-guided, clean water tour. The program's goal is to educate the public on ways to manage storm water runoff. The program is in its fourth year.
