Recycling and Garbage
Introduction
The City of Shoreview is committed to reducing, reusing and recycling products in our community. Our recycling program, open system of private trash collection and annual Clean Up events help residents dispose of materials properly.
Shoreview residents can use the Ramsey County Compost Site to dispose of grass clippings, yard waste and tree disposal. The Site also offers wood chips and black dirt available for pickup.
Recycling and Garbage Schedule
The City is divided into five zones, each representing a day of the week, for garbage and recycling collection. Public holidays often change the pickup day temporarily, so please check the pickup schedule around public holidays. The City also offers a free e-mail reminder service, where residents can sign up to receive an e-mail reminder when the schedule may change due to a public holiday.
What zone am I in?
Recycling
Shoreview's curbside recycling program is funded by a combination of users fees and state grant monies. The City sponsors Spring and Fall Clean Up days, provides liaisons to Ramsey County's Household Hazardous Waste Facility and Compost Site.
Recyclables should be placed loose in your green and yellow cart. If you bag your recycling please use paper, not plastic, bags.
What can I recycle?
Glass bottles and jars
Metal cans
Plastic bottles with a neck
Mail, office, and school papers
Magazines and catalogs
Newspapers and inserts
Phone books
Shredded paper in closed paper bags
Cardboard boxes (See below for additional instructions)
Cereal boxes, cracker boxes, pasta boxes, and cake mix boxes
Shoe boxes, gift boxes, and electronic boxes
Boxes from toothpaste, medications, and other toiletries
Pop and beer cartons
Cardboard can either be placed in the recycling bin, bundled and placed beside the cart or dropped off at the "Green Bin" in the upper parking lot at the Ramsey County Library in Shoreview.
Recycling Service Questions
If your recycling bin is too big or too small then you can contact the City contractor, Waste Management, and change it to an appropriate size. If you need a new bin please call 952.890.1100 or visit, the Waste Management website.
Recycling Program Questions
How do I get the recycling cart?
Waste Management delivered a mid-size 64-gallon recycling cart to single-family residential properties and a 35-gallon recycling cart to townhouse properties the week of July 25. If you feel that you need either a larger or smaller cart after the initial 90-day period, Waste Management will replace the cart at your request.
What is single-sort recycling?
The City of Shoreview has a single-sort recycling program where all recyclable materials (newspapers, magazines, junk mail, bottles and plastic containers) can be placed into one recycling container and is collected every other week.
If you have questions regarding recycling in Shoreview, contact environmentalservices@shoreviewmn.gov or call 651.490.4665.
Garbage
All waste materials and garbage must be kept in a closed container or stored inside a building. Refuse containers cannot be stored in the front yard of the property except on the day of collection. Minnesota law requires all property owners to have garbage collection services. Shoreview has an open hauling system for garbage collection, which means that the City licenses several garbage haulers to serve the community but does not control rates. Residents must contract with a licensed hauler.
How can I get rid of this?
The City offers Cleanup Events every spring and fall where residents can bring charitable donations, electronics and garbage/refuse not accepted by hauler. For specific dates, check the City Calendar in May and October or contact Environmental Services.
Ramsey County offers year-round household hazardous waste (HHW) collection in St. Paul, at Bay West, Inc., 5 Empire Drive (between Rice and Jackson, just north of Pennsylvania Avenue, near the State Capitol). The site is closed on major holidays.

Yard Waste Disposal
Ramsey County operates a public compost site for the disposal of leaves, grass clippings, brush and other compost materials. No stumps, please. There is no charge for disposal of these materials at the compost site, but residents must show proof of Ramsey County residency. The City no longer provides wood chips. Check with the compost site to see if they have chips available.

Used Oil Disposal
Used motor oil is toxic and poses a threat to humans, animals, surface water, ground water and even air, if disposed of improperly. The oil picks up chemicals from the engine as it moves through your lawn mower, boat, car or truck. Used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water if it is dumped on to the ground! It is illegal to put motor oil or filters in the trash.
Used motor oil and filters can be dropped off at the Used Oil Disposal site in Arden Hills (located on 1500 block of Ben Franklin Road, north of Hwy. 96 and west of Hamline Avenue) or any of the Ramsey County Household Hazardous Waste sites. There is no disposal fee at these sites.

Electronics Disposal
Under Minnesota State Statute 115A.9565, it is illegal to place computer monitors and televisions in the trash in Minnesota. Televisions and computer monitors have been found to contain lead and other heavy metals, and, if disposed of improperly, can harm the environment.
If you can't get to the Cleanup Day events, visit Green Guardian for several other options for recycling electronics, including:
Take-Back Programs: Some manufacturers and retailers will take back your old electronics for recycling.
Garbage Haulers: Some haulers pick up electronics for recycling.
Recycling Companies: You can drop off your old electronics for recycling.
Government Recycling Programs: Your city, county, or neighborhood may pick up electronics or offer drop-off sites.
Battery Disposal
You can take batteries to the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off facilities. This includes all batteries: auto, power tool battery packs, Nickel-cadmium, button batteries (silver disc) lithium, etc.
