Property Taxes
In order to fully understand the impact of the City's budget and property tax levy on the individual property tax bill, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of the property tax system and the other taxing jurisdictions that also impact property taxes. In Minnesota, the property tax bill is the result of the actions of several different levels of government, including the State Legislature, County, school district, City, as well as metro-wide jurisdictions.
How property tax is determined ?
Property tax levies for school districts, counties, cities, as well as metro-wide entities like the Metropolitan Council, Metropolitan Transit, and Mosquito Control make up the property tax bill. According to state statutes, these levies are distributed and collected based upon the value of property in the jurisdictions service area. For example:
Metro-wide levies are distributed to all properties in the metro area
School levies are distributed to all property within the school district
County levies are distributed to all property within the county
City levies are distributed to all property within the city
