A message from city council

Below is a new message from the Shoreview City Council on recent ICE activities. View a video from the city council on Facebook or Instagram.

Over the last month, we’ve heard from many of you on the direct impacts Operation Metro Surge has had on you, your family, and your neighbors. There are numerous examples of tactics used by federal immigration agents which contradict our vision of being a safe, welcoming community, and violate the basic rights we all have under the Constitution.

We know these actions are creating anxiety, fear, and heartbreaking loss across our community. We’ve heard accounts in which residents are scared to leave their homes for work, school, or errands.

Shoreview has long been a city that values dignity, respect, and community. As your city council, we stand with residents, faith leaders, educators, businesses, and community organizations who are standing up for those values and responding with courage and compassion.

We are committed to keeping our community safe, sharing accurate information, and building connections. We may not be able to influence the policies of the federal government but we can control how we respond to those policies.  We choose compassion, inclusion, and to live our shared values.

We unequivocally condemn these dangerous and inhumane actions taken by the federal agents. We call for these actions to stop and for federal agents to carry out their duties in a law-abiding and accountable way, work with state and local officials, and provide transparency to the public.

We are proud of our fellow Minnesotans and support peaceful protest. We encourage our residents to speak out against injustice, hold your government accountable, and continue to find ways to bring together our community.
