Questions to ask your hauler

Where does my garbage go?

Trash haulers are required to inform their customers each year where they take their waste for disposal. Waste can now go to a resource recovery facility where it is processed into fuel to burn to produce electricity.

Are there additional charges I may see itemized on my bill?

Some haulers charge additional fees such as a fuel charge or environmental fee but do not include these in quoted rates.

How do I get rid of extra items that do not fit in my cart?
  • Call your trash service to check if they can pick it up from your curb. Trash haulers usually require payment before pickup occurs.
  • Bring your appliances, electronics, hazardous waste, mattresses and more to a Cleanup day.
  • Bring your items to the transfer stations listed below. Call for fees.

Where to store garbage & recycling bins

Garbage and recycling bins can be stored in the following locations:

  • In a garage
  • Behind your home, stored against the building
  • On the side of your home, stored against the building but not if the bins are facing a side street
  • In or next to a shed
  • In front of your home but only if you have a single car garage or a yard that has a difficult situation like a large hill. In this case a fencing screen is required.
  • On collection day - curbside on the driveway or grass
    • Do not place in the street - this can disrupt snow plowing or street sweeping operations

Know what not to throw

The following items cannot be placed in your regular trash.

  • Appliances
  • Electronics including TVs and computers
  • Household hazardous waste including paint, motor oil, and compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Unwanted or expired medicine
  • Yard waste

Fix-it clinics

Bring your broken household goods and clothing in need of repair to a Ramsey County Fix-It Clinic. Volunteers provide free, guided assistance to disassemble, troubleshoot, and fix items.
