The building inspection division administers building permits and inspections. The desk is open 8 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Contact community development.

Driveways, fences, patios & accessory structures

Thinking about a shed, driveway/patio, deck, or fence? These projects require a zoning permit. Submit a complete application with site plans for approval. Ensure your project complies with size, setback, and material regulations for a smooth permitting process.

Permit applications

Download applications for a variety of permits including building, electrical, HVAC & plumbing, and grading.

You need a building permit if you are building, improving, repairing, changing, or moving a building. This includes but is not limited to:

Decks
Garages
Porches
Basement remodeling
Windows
Siding
Roofing

Permits are also needed for:

Electrical
Plumbing
Heating
Air conditioning

Zoning permits are needed for fences, sheds, patios and driveways.

All new construction, additions, alterations, or repairs that require a building permit also require a smoke & carbon monoxide detector inspection. All detectors must be installed to code and working properly.

Download and complete the permit application

Email the application and plans to permits@shoreviewmn.gov or mail/drop off the application and plans to:

Issuing permits

Staff will notify applicants once permits are approved
Applicants can pay by credit card via a provided link, in person or mail a check to the above address
Staff will email the permits once payment is received

Permit applications that require a plan review typically take 10 business days to process and approve for issuance. It may take longer for applications with insufficient information or larger scale projects.

Inspections

Submit an inspection request at least three working days before the requested date. Include the address, phone number of the person on site and what kind of inspection you need. You can request an inspection by emailing the inspector at:

Commercial inspections
Residential inspections
Roof and siding inspections
Siding and roofing inspections can be completed with no one on site.

Permit fees depend on the type of permit being pulled.

Residential HVAC, electrical, and plumbing - flat fees
Building permits - based on valuation
Commercial permits -based on valuation

Credit card transactions are limited to payments under $10,000. Please submit a check for any payments $10,000 or more.

Online permitting for contractors

Contractors can apply and pay for simple residential building, electric, HVAC and plumbing permits online. Contractors must be registered with the City of Shoreview online system and have a current state license.

To apply and pay online:

Email the building department for your web pin at permits@shoreviewmn.gov
Set up an account with BS&A online
On the left-hand menu, click "Apply for a permit" (if applying on your phone, this option is under" services")
Enter a contractor web pin ID#
Select the project address
Complete the application form
Pay for the permit
- Credit card transactions are limited to payments under $10,000
- Please submit a check for any payments $10,000 or more
